That ‘new promotion smell’ will be in the air on Saturday November 3rd when the inaugural World Series of Fighting event kicks off in Las Vegas, Nevada. Under the guidance of Ray Sefo, the new organization will open its doors and attempt to compete with the big boys right out of the gates. With the UFC firmly entrenched as the number one organization, Bellator and Strikeforce sitting at number two and three depending on who you ask, WSOF should will fall into line as the fourth biggest promotion at least for the time being.
The company didn’t hesitate to start signing some big name talent for their first event. Headlining the card, a pair of former Strikeforce Heavyweights will collide as ex-UFC champion Andrei Arlovski battles Devin Cole. Arlovski’s No Contest ruling in One FC early this year halted a 2 a fight winning streak, while Cole returns to action for the first time in 10 months attempting to earn his third consecutive victory.
In the co-main event of the night former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres looks to return to the win column when he battles Marlon Moraes. Moraes, a Brazilian Muay Thai Champion is still relatively new to the world of MMA with only 13 career fights, but will have a huge opportunity against a fighter on the level of Torres. The winner of this bout could have a date with Tyson Nam in the not too distant future, potentially with a WSOF Bantamweight title on the line.
Also on the main card Anthony Johnson battles DJ Linderman in a Light Heavyweight bout, Gregor Gracie and Tyson Steele lock it up in what could be an entertaining grappling based engagement, and feared kickboxer Tyrone Spong makes his long awaited MMA debut against Travis Bartlett.
It will be interesting to see how the first event of the new promotion kicks off, you can catch the main card on the NBC Sports Network and the preliminary portion of the event will be streaming live on Sherdog.com.
