The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will open up the month of October inMinneapolis,Minnesotaon Friday, October 5 with UFC on FX 5. The main event features a heavyweight showdown between Travis Browne and Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva. While the smaller heavyweights have dominated the UFC heavyweight division as of late, both these hulking men will look to show fans what the true big men of the division can do.
While ‘Big foot’ had risen to prominence after his big wins over Andrei Arlovski, Mike Kyle, and Fedor Emelianenko, he was unable to keep his momentum alive in 2011-2012. Antonio Silva’s consecutive losses to Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez makes this fight a must win in order for Silva to remain relevant in the division’s title picture. On the other hand, Travis Brown remains an undefeated prospect and a win over ‘Big Foot’ puts him one or two fights away from a possible title shot.
The co-main event features a clash between welterweight veterans Jay ‘The Thoroughbred’ Hieron and Jake ‘The Juggernaut’ Ellenberger. Hieron is looking to finally make a name for himself in the UFC after failing to find success in the organization on two separate occasions. He faces no easy task in Ellenberger. ‘The Juggernaut’ was on the fast track to a tile shot before running into the knees of Martin Kampmann at UFC at the TUF Finale in June. Both men will look to climb back up the welterweight ranks with an impressive win on Friday night.
The main card also features a highly significant flyweight bout between John Dodson and Jussier da Silva, which may determine the next title challenger in the division. Finalizing the main broadcast will be a welterweight scrap between Josh Neer and Justin Edwards.
