The UFC Middleweight division’s list of contenders is growing and when the UFC returns to Manchester, UK at UFC Fight Night 30 a new shark in the 185 pound tank will make his debut. Lyoto Machida, the former Light Heavyweight champion, makes his first Middlweight debut when he meets #5 ranked Mark Munoz. Machida was originally scheduled to face Tim Kennedy later this year, but the opportunity to face a ranked opponent couldn’t be passed up and Machida jumped on the opportunity.

Munoz is coming off an impressive return to action after almost a year away from the cage, when he destroyed fellow top 10 ranked Tim Boetsch. Munoz has been hovering around the top of the division now for a couple of years a win over his highly regarded opponent could give him consideration for another title eliminator bout. For Machida, he has all the tools to make a run at another title, but this fight is crucial for him to gain a foothold in the new division.

Melvin Guillard and Ross Pearson have been long time staples of the UFC’s Lightweight division. Both men have struggled at times in their careers, but with Pearson riding a 2 fight winning streak and Guillard coming off an impressive KO of Mac Danzig the winner of this fight will gain some significant momentum. With neither man known for their offensive grappling skills, this bout should be contested primarily on the feet and should be a frenetic flurry of fisticuffs.

In the Light Heavyweight division, Canada’s Ryan Jimmo battles the UK’s most dangerous 205er in Jimi Manuwa. With a combined 20 knockouts between these two warriors there is an excellent chance that this fight will not be going to the judge’s scorecards. Jimmo comes into the bout 2-1 in the UFC and Manuwa a perfect 2-0. The winner of this fight will be inline for step up in competition and will continue there trek towards Light Heavyweight glory.

Rounding out the six fight main card will be three more fights including a battle of Lightweight prospects. The United Kingdom’s own Norman Parke tries to continue his post Ultimate Fighter: Smashes success when he meets fellow TUF alumni Jon Tuck. Middleweight veteran Alessio Sakara returns to competition when he battles injury replacement Nicholas Musoke. Sakara has been out of action for almost a year and is enduring a 3 fight losing streak that could be extended to four, ultimately costing himself a spot on the UFC roster, if he doesn’t come ready to face his newly named opponent. Starting the main card will a Flyweight bout featuring #5 ranked Brazilian basher John Lineker taking on Phil Harris. Lineker is moving closer to a title shot with every impressive victory and a dominant performance over the upset minded Harris could clinch him a future date with the winner of December’s Flyweight title fight.

The preliminary portion of the card is headlined by an interesting bout between Poland’s Piotr Hallmann and TUF finalist Al Iaquinta. Hallman is coming off an impressive upset win over Brazilian Francisco Trinaldo, while Iaquinta dispatched Ryan Couture in his return to action. Also on the prelims, top 10 ranked Women’s Bantamweight contender Rosi Sexton meets the young and hungry Jessica Andrade and Middleweights Luke Barnatt and Andrew Craig collide. Andy Ogle fights veteran Cole Miller at Featherweight and Michael Kuiper squares off with Bradley Scott at Middleweight.
