UFC Fight Night 29: Maia vs Sheilds Predictions- Kamikaze Overdrive MMA

Scott Johnson

The UFC once again heads to South America’s largest country, Brazil, for UFC Fight Night 29: Maia vs Shields. As the event name would indicate, this October 9th event will feature a Welterweight bout between top ten ranked Demian Maia and American grappling ace Jake Shields. Both men are former title challengers. Demian Maia fought for the UFC Middleweight title earlier in his career against Anderson Silva and Jake Shields was defeated by Georges St-Pierre for the Welterweight title. Additionally, Shields held the Strikeforce 185 pound strap before abdicated and signing with the UFC.

Maia is on the cusp of his first shot at the Welterweight champ and a win over Shields could move him into a number one contender’s bout for his next appearance. For the American he returned to the division win a victory and will need to put a convincing sequence of wins together to re-enter the contender conversation, but defeating Maia would be a huge win. Who will win this battle of grappling experts?

The co-main event features one of Brazil’s brightest young stars in Erick Silva as he meets South Korea’s Dong Hyun Kim. Kim is one of the most underappreciated fighters in the division, with only one legitimate defeat, coming at the hands of Jon Fitch. His recent TKO lose due to injury against Demian Maia has lit a fire under the Judo Black belt and a return engagement with his fellow main carder could be in the works with a win. For Silva, he has had a dominant run inside the Octagon, minus a defeat against Jon Fitch which served as his first real test of upper level competition. Against Kim, Silva will once again get a chance to prove he is ready for the next level of opponent and a shot at the division’s top 10.

Two Light Heavyweight bouts also go down on the main card. Thiago Silva battles formerly retired and rejuvenated Matt Hamill, as both men hope to return to their days near the top of the division. In a bout that has Fight of the Night written all over it, Brazilian pugilist Fabio Maldonado battles American brawler, Joey Beltran. Kicking of the main card will be the Welterweight debut of dangerous submission fighter Rousimar Palhares as he meets the always durable and underrated Mike Pierce. In the only fight involving two top 10 ranked fighters, Bantamweights Raphael Assuncao and TJ Dillashaw will fight with further aspirations of a title shot on the line.

The five card preliminary battle will feature a Featherweight bout between fellow Brazilians, with Hacran Dias needing to rebound from defeat when he meets TUF Brazil vet Rodrigo Damm. Also on the prelims the often miss-pronounced Ildemar Alcantara (I am looking at you Jon Anik) welcomes Igor Araujo to the cage, and top 10 ranked Flyweight Chris Cariaso faces off with Iliarde Santos is a must win bout for both men.

As is the case with all Brazilin card, UFC Fight Night 29 is going to be another fantastic event high on action and excitement.
