UFC Fight Night 26: Shogun vs Sonnen Predictions- Kamikaze Overdrive MMA

Scott Johnson

The next chapter in the UFC/ Fox relationship begins with arguably one of the most stacked cards of all time. On August 17 the UFC heads to Boston, Mass for Fight Night 26: Shogun vs Sonnen on the newly named Fox Sports 1 Network.

Headlining the event will be a 205 pound battle between former Light Heavyweight champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and former 205 and 185 title challenger Chael P. Sonnen. Sonnen is contemplating a return to the Middleweight division, but before the American Gangster heads back down the weigh scale he will engage in a potential battle for the ages with the former Pride superstar. Shogun’s recent loss to now title challenger Alexander Gustafsson severely damaged his own title shot aspirations, but a win over Sonnen would get the Chute Boxe alumni back in the win column and hopefully the title hunt.

In the co-main event, former Strikeforce Champion Alistair Overeem looks to reroute his UFC title hopes with a win over rising star and gargantuan Heavyweight Travis Browne. The 6’7” Hawaiian knockout artist knows that a win over the well respected K-1 Kickboxing Champion could potentially align himself for his own shot at the gold. The chances of this fight going the distance are pretty much non-existent, but the question remains who will have their hand raised and who will be left crumpled on the mat.

The 6 fight main card will also feature a high profile Bantamweight clash between former WEC Featherweight champion Urijah Faber and vastly underrated but extremely talented Brazilian Yuri Alcantara. Matt Brown and Mike Pyle will also be putting their respective resurgent winning streaks on the line when they meet in a Welterweight fight. Both men have increasingly improved their stalk within the division by stringing together a number of impressive wins, but one of those streaks will come to an end here.

The much anticipate UFC sophomore appearance of TUF 17 runner-up Uriah Hall will take place against former UFC Welterweight turned Middleweight, John ‘Doomsday’ Howard. Howard is the third opponent hat Hall has been linked to for this event, but arguably the best suited to provide an exciting striking based battle for the ages. Opening the main card, Boston native Joe Lauzon returns to action against another former TUF Finalist in Michael Johnson. Both fighters are coming off losses, but they are more than capable of competing with the elite of the division and the winner of this bout will probably get that opportunity.

The prelims are equally as loaded with a number of high profile lighter weight bouts. Top 10 ranked Bantamweights Brad Pickett and Michael McDonald will meet at the top of the prelim card. Exciting Irish fight Conor McGregor faces Max Holloway in a Featherweight battle of two of the most promising young fighters in the UFC. Adding to the already impressive prelim lineup TUF winner Diego Brando fights the uber aggressive Daniel Pineda to start the televised broadcast. The Facebook prelims will consist of 3 bouts, including veterans Manny Gamburyan and Cole Miller meeting and young figthers Ramsey Nijem and James Vick fighting at Lightweight.

UFC Fight Night 26 is going to be a fantastic card top to bottom with a tonne of potential to make some gambling money.
