UFC 179: Aldo x Mendes II Predictions- Kamikaze Overdrive MMA

Scott Johnson

After a 3 week break from action, the UFC’s Octagon will once again return to the spotlight- this time in Rio de Janeiro for UFC 179. At UFC 142, Jose Aldo used a fence grab and well timed knee to retain his title and hand Chad Mendes his first career loss. At UFC 176, an injury forced the champ to withdraw from the rematch and the subsequent cancellation of the entire event. At UFC 179, Mendes will finally get his long awaited redo with the only UFC Featherweight champion in promotional history.

Since their first meeting, Mendes has dispatched 5 straight opponents-4 by knockout. He will be looking to ride the new found momentum created by his teammate TJ Dillashaw, who shockingly upset Aldo’s training partner Renan Barao to capture the Bantamweight title at UFC 173.

For Aldo, since toppling Mendes he compiled 3 more wins over topflight competition; Chan Sung Jung, former Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, and most recently outlasting Ricardo Lamas. Many have called for the Brazilian to work harder to finish his opposition as Mendes is his only non-injury related stoppage since moving to the UFC. If the mob atmosphere that followed Aldo into the stands after his first win over Mendes is any indication, the atomosphere for this fight will be electric and the stadium in Rio will be rocking. Nova Uniao vs Alpha Male part 6? Yes please.

Also on the main card, Lightweights Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira collide in the co-main event. Teixeira is making his first post-title fight appearance, after dropping a decision at UFC 172 to reining champion Jon Jones. Glover will need to be very wary of the post-title fight letdown that has cost many fighters in their first performance after faltering with the gold on the line. At the same event, Phil Davis’s climb up the ranks took a massive hit when he was soundly defeated by embattled Anthony Johnson. Both men need a win to re-establish their position as legit contenders in the division, but only one will accomplish that feat.
