New Years week is always a big time of the year for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and they always strive to provide some of the biggest match ups possible to end their yearly schedule with a bang. This year is no different as the organization returns to its home base in Las Vegas for UFC 155 on Saturday, December 29th. The stakes could not get any bigger as Brazilian knockout artist Junior Dos Santos puts his heavyweight title on the line against a familiar foe in the man he defeated to win the crown, Cain Velasquez. Velasquez, the first Mexican-American heavyweight champion, has made it clear that the loss of his title to Dos Santos still haunts him to this day. Undoubtedly, Velasquez will be coming prepared for a five round war against the Brazilian bomber. Nonetheless, Dos Santos has proven that his fists are a formidable equalizer to all skill sets he has faced thus far. In addition to the heavyweight championship, the main card also features significant match-ups in the lightweight and middleweight divisions that will determine where each fighter stands amongst the elites in each respective division.
Firstly, Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller will hook up for a high octane lightweight battle of perennial contenders. Both men have flirted with a title shot throughout their UFC careers and are both looking to make a statement in the division and climb near the top of the division. Similarly, middleweights Tim Boetsch and Alan Belcher have lingered amongst the top of their division and will finally look to get the respect they deserve with wins against their respective opponents. Boetsch faces Costa Phillipou, who has made a name for himself and will be looking to catapult himself into the conversation of top 185-pounders with a win over the Jeet-Kune-Do specialist. Belcher will face one of his toughest tests when he squares off against former title challenger Yushin Okami. This fight should go a long way in determining whether Belcher has improved enough to be considered a legitimate threat to Anderson Silva’s throne.
Rounding out the main card will be a thrilling middleweight fight between the always exciting Chris Leben and Derek Brunson. Both men are coming off of KO losses and will be looking to impress the UFC brass, and convince management to keep them on board, albeit both for much different reasons.
The Live preliminaries on FX will be highlighted by a bantamweight bout between two dangerous bantamweights,Brad Pickett vs. Eddie Wineland. Also, bantamweight powerhouse Erik Perez will return to action facing Byron Bloodworth. In addition, Melvin Guillard will face Jamie Varner in a bout that was supposed to happen earlier this month but was scratched at the last minute due to an illness sustained by Varner. The final bout that will be airing live on FX will be a lightweight title between Michael Johnson and Myles Jury.
