On October 13th 2012 the UFC returns to Brazil for UFC 153: Silva vs Bonnar. Much like the majority of recent UFC cards, UFC 153 was hit hard by the injury bug forcing Dana White and company to restructure the main attractions in the best way they had available. Formerly headlined by a highly anticipated Featherweight title bout pitting Jose Aldo against former Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and a co-main event battle between Glover Teixeira and Rampage Jackson, the lose of Jackson and Aldo in one day had the potential for a UFC 151 level disaster. In the following days the UFC brass made a few calls and set up 3 interesting and potentially entertaining bouts.
In the main event Anderson Silva will return to the Light Heavyweight division in a high risk/ low reward scenario against Ultimate Fighter finalist Stephan Bonnar. Bonnar had seemingly walked away from the fight-game claiming he was no longer interested in competeing unless it was at the highest level possible and the it would appear that the UFC has gratned his wish. With a win over Anderson Silva, Bonnar could propel himself directly into the title picture at 205, while the Middleweight Champion has next to nothing to gain from this other then the oppurtunity to once against compete in front of his fellow Brazillians.
In the co-main event another Brazillian icon, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, will return to action against Dave Herman. Both fighters are coming off defeats, Nogueira suffering a devastating submission defeat agaisnt rival Frank Mir and Herman dropping back to back fights both by knockout. Nogueira’s defeat against Mir ws the first time the 3rd degree BJJ Black belt was forced into submission, allowing Mir to lay claim to becoming the first fighter to both tap and knockout Minotauro. Herman on the other hand started his Octagon career with a win, but having dropped back to back fights his position in the division and with the company could be riding on this oppurtunity.
Filling out the rest of the main card will be a Light Heavyweight bout between Glover Teixeira and Fabio Maldonado that is sure to provide fireworks as these two striking based fighters will look to impress infront of their home crowd. Welterweight prospect Erik Silva will face his next major test as he tries to assend the title contention ladder when he battles for title challenger Jon Fitch. Wagner Prado will try to make good on a second oppurtunity after his original meeting with wrestling standout Phil Davis was cut short do to an eye poke and Demian Maia battles Rick Story in an exciting Welterweight belt to kick start the main card. The preliminary portion of the event will be headlined by a clash of Ultimate Fighter Alumni in Rony Jason and Sam Sicilia and feature multiple other Brazilian based fighters.
