The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) once again invades the Pepsi Centre inDenver, Colorado for UFC 150: Henderson Vs. Edgar 2. The rematch for the UFC lightweight title between Benson “Smooth” Henderson and Frankie “The Answer” Edgar is expected to extend the fireworks that were ignited in their first meeting at UFC 144 inJapan. Edgar will be looking to avenge his loss andHendersonis out to prove that he can be a dominant champion in the division.
The co-main event features the return of Jake Shields to the middleweight division after his subpar success in the UFC’s shark-infested welterweight waters. Shields’ opponent, Ed “Short Fuse” Herman, is riding a three fight win streak and is charged with the task of welcoming the Gracie jiu-jitsu black belt to the organization’s middleweight division. Shields is looking to replicate the middleweight success he achieved under the Strikeforce banner, and Herman will make a solid first test.
The main card also includes a possible fight-of-the-night match up between Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Both men had impressive campaigns in 2010-2011 campaigns putting together five and six fight win streaks, respectively. Nonetheless, the latter half of 2011 saw both men’s title hopes disappear with disheartening losses to top opponents. The fight has the potential for high-flying action and the winner will put his name back into the conversation regarding top contenders in the 155-pound division.
Rounding out the main card will be a middleweight tilt between Yushin Okami and Buddy Roberts and a featherweight battle between the lanky Hawaiian, Max Holloway, and Ultimate Fighter 15 alum, Justin Lawrence. Okami is coming off a shocking KO loss to Tim Boetsch and will look to reassert himself in the 185-pound division against Roberts. Meanwhile,Lawrencelooked spectacular in his octagon debut winning with a highlight-reel head kick and will look to extend his success against a young and talented prospect in Max Holloway
The live prelims will be highlighted by a featherweight match-up between Dennis Bermudez and Tom Hayden and a lightweight tilt between Thiago Tavares and Dennis Hallman. Four more preliminary bouts will round up the card inDenver:
185 lbs.: Jared Hamman vs. Michael Kuiper
135 lbs.: Ken Stone vs. Erik Perez
135 lbs.: Dustin Pague vs.Chico Camus
145 lbs.: Eiji Mitsuoka vs. Nik Lentz
In recent years, fights involving Frankie Edgar have usually created more questions rather than provide any answers. Although Edgar’s nickname is the answer, he only seems to provide decisive ones after multiple fights with opponents (see BJ Penn and Grey Maynard). Will Frankie Edgar mount another improbable comeback that will secure yet another trilogy bout? Can Ben Henderson prove that his size and athleticism will be the perfect ingredients for a long reign in the division? Can Jake Shield’s finally achieve some success in the UFC by changing weight classes? Keep it locked on Kamizaveoverdrive.net to find out.
