On Saturday, August 18, Strikeforce returns toSan Diego,CAwhere the women’s bantamweight championship will be on the line. With Gina Carano out of the mixed martial arts mix as of late, Ronda Rousey has stepped in to become the face of women’s MMA. Blessed with the perfect balance of beauty, charisma, and fighting talent, Rousey quickly rose to prominence and defeated Meisha Tate to win the bantamweight championship in her last bout. Rousey will look to defend her title for the fist time against hard-nosed Canadian striker, Sarah Kaufman. Kaufman is on a three fight winning streak and is out to prove that Rousey does not deserve the hype she has received.
In the co-main event, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza takes on Derek Brunson in a middleweight fight that will bump the winner one step closer to a title shot. Brunson is coming of a loss to Kendall Grove in his last fight and is looking to bounce back with the biggest win of his career against “Jacare.” Souza will look to hand Brunson his second loss in a row and gain another title shot by using his superior grappling and experience.
The main card also features a 170-pound battle betweenBelgium’s Tarec Saffiedine and Roger Bowling. Bowling is coming off two knockout victories and will face a stiff test against Saffiedine. Saffiedine is also looking to extend his win streak to three and move one step closer to a fight for the Strikeforce welterweight title. Rounding up the main card will be middleweight bouts placing Ovince St. Preux versus T.J Cook and Lumumba Sayers versus Anthony “Lionheart” Smith.
The Strikeforce preliminary fights, which will be airing live on Showtime Extreme, are highlighted by the return of Meisha Tate after losing her women’s bantamweight title to the headliner on the card, Ronda Rousey. Tate returns to action against tough veteran Julie Kedzie and will look to place herself in a position to regain her coveted title. The prelims also include:
155 lbs.: Bobby Green vs. Matt Ricehouse
185 lbs.: Adlan Amagov vs. Keith Berry
135 lbs.: Germaine de Randamie vs. Hiroko Yamanaka
Will Ronda Rousey prove that her win against Meisha Tate was not a fluke or will Sarah Kaufman rise to the occasion and derail Rousey’s hype train? Will Derek Brunson get caught in one of “Jacare’s” nasty submissions or will he upset the Brazilian en route to establishing another contender in the Strikeforce middleweight division.
