UFC on FOX 10: Henderson vs Thomson Predictions- Kamikaze Overdrive MMA

Scott Johnson

Former UFC Lightweight champion Benson Henderson is once again coming off a title fight defeat at the hands of Anthony Pettis. When Pettis took his WEC title away in the promotions final fight, Henderson went on a mission, capturing the aforementioned UFC strap and successfully defending it on multiple occasions. Josh Thomson, a former Strikeforce title holder had earned the right to challenge Pettis for the title until ‘Shotime’ went down with an injury. Already in the midst of a 9 month layoff between fights, Thomson opted to battle Henderson and put his shot at the gold on the line.

With the list of Lightweight contenders growing, headlined by the likes of Gilbert Melendez, Khabib Nurmagomedov, TJ Grant, and Rafael Dos Anjos, the loser of this bout will take a significant step backwards in their pursuit of the UFC title.

In the co-main event, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belt and former Heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga meets rising young gun Stipe Miocic. Miocic is fresh off a upset victory over Roy Nelson, the biggest win of his career, a second straight triumph over a name opponent like Napao would certainly go a long way to increasing his stock in a division needing future title contenders. Gonzaga has gone 5-1 since un-retiring, with a lot of the success coming as the result of a recommitment to his grappling game. Despite a return to his roots, he has won his last 2 bouts by way of quick knockout. Will this recent success disrupt Gabe and turn this contest into a stand-up war (for how ever long it should last) for the ages?

Also on the main card, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone enters the Octagon for the first time in 2014. Across the Octagon will be a lesser known, but still incredibly dangerous Brazilian in Adriano Martins. Martins took a dominant victory in his one and only Strikeforce appearance and parlayed that opportunity into another impressive performance in his UFC debut when he scored multiple knockdowns and eventually submitted Daron Cruickshank. Cerrone has suffered multiple setbacks during his UFC run, ascending close to a title shot but always coming up just short. He cannot afford another defeat.

A pair of 155ers turned Featherweights will kick start the main card. Jeremy Stephens has gone  perfect 2-0 since making the divisional drop, with a one sided decision win in his divisional debut, followed by a brutal knockout in his second appearance. Elkins has fought 7 times at Featherweight, compiling a 6-1 record. His only setback came against arguably the 2nd best fighter in the division, Chad Mendes. Elkins rebounded with a true to form victory over Hatsu Hioki. He is currently ranked as the #10 fighter in the division, a spot that Stephens will be looking to usurp with a win.

170lbs- #11 Kamaru Usman (9-1-0) vs Sean Strickland (18-1-0)

  • Kamaru Usman -316 (73%, 47 Votes)
  • Sean Strickland +276 (27%, 17 Votes)
