UFC 171: Hendricks vs Lawler Predictions- Kamikaze Overdrive MMA
The future of the UFC Welterweight division hangs in the balance with UFC 171 representing arguably the most important night for the division in recent memory. The main event will crown the new UFC Welterweight champion, pitting the last man to face Georges St-Pierre, Johny Hendricks against ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler. This will be the first UFC Welterweight title fight, excluding interim bouts, not to include St-Pierre since the UFC 63 meeting between then champion Matt Hughes and challenger BJ Penn in 2006.
Hendricks is coming off of a controversial decision defeat against the former champion at UFC 167. Many felt that Hendricks did enough to unseat the champ, but the left the cage without the belt. Robbie Lawler returned to the UFC after a number of stops outside of the promotion and quickly rocketed up the ranks. A trio of wins over Josh Koscheck, Bobby Voelker, and Rory MacDonald has positioned Lawler to challenge for the title. Both men are heavy-handed wrecking machines, but only one can leave with the gold.
In the co-main event, former interim-champion and WEC champ, #2 ranked Carlos Condit battles the fast rising #11 ranked Tyron Woodley. Condit is on the cusp of a shot at whoever is crowned the new champion, but will need to avoid overlooking a very dangerous opponent. Woodley has picked up solid wins over former title challenger Josh Koscheck and veteran Jay Hieron since signing on with the UFC. He isn’t a stranger to title fights, losing his final Strikeforce appearance against Nate Marquardt with the vacant Welterweight title on the line. Condit wins, he fights for the title, and if Woodley wins and he takes a massive step forward towards his own shot.
The event will feature 7 of the top 15 ranked Welterweights in the promotion, including Jake Shields and Hector Lombard who will also battle it out on the main card. While this bout will take place in the Welterweight division, these two men formerly held the Middleweight champions in Strikeforce and Bellator. Neither man was defeated with their titles on the lines, so not only does this bout have major Welterweight implications, but it is also a dream meeting of former champions from competing promotions.
Also on the main card, Diego Sanchez battles Myles Jury in a Lightweight scrap between a rising young star and a grizzled veteran. To open the card, newly minted Light Heavyweight Nikita Krylov fights Strikeforce veteran Ovince St-Preux in a bout most likely not headed to the scorecards.
