UFC 149: Faber vs Barao- Predictions
July 21st, 2012 a new UFC/WEC Bantamweight Champion will be crowned for the first time since March 2010, when the UFC debuts in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. With Dominick Cruz on the sidelines for the foreseeable future, Renan Barao has stepped up to face number one contender and former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber to crown what is essentially a number one contender’s title. The holder of this Championship Belt will be given the first opportunity to battle a healthy Dominick Cruz upon his return to action.
In the co-main event, former Bellator Middleweight champion Hector Lombard will make his long awaited UFC debut and put his 25 fight undefeated streak on the line. Opposing Lombard will be Tim Boetsch, undefeated at Middleweight and the owner of one of the biggest comebacks in UFC history, the Barbarian has quietly moved himself into title contention. The winner of this bout will look to move into the void that now exists at the top of the list of contenders. With a win Lombard could certainly make a claim for a shot at the gold and for Boetsch a victory over Lombard could allow him to make a similar claim.
Rounding out the main card a pair of Heavyweights will lock up when Shawn Jordan battles long serving UFC veteran Cheick Kongo. Injury replacement Brain Ebersole will look for his second with in roughly a month when he tangles with James Head and Chris Clements will try to start his UFC career with a second victory against Matt Riddle.
Calgary will be rocking from the opening bell of the first preliminary fight to the final call in the Main Event. This event may have suffered through a number of injury related changes and many skeptics have voiced their displeasure with a lack of top level competitors on this card. Although many big name competitors have been scratched from the event: Jose Aldo, Erick Koch, Shogun Rua, Thiago Silva, Michael Bisping, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Thiago Alves, Siyar Bahadurzada and Claude Patrick just to name a few, fans can hope for a continuation of the concept that the events that lack top name talent often provide some of the most entertaining fights.
