The Ultimate Figther 17 Predictions- Kamikaze Overdrive MMA

Josh Harper

The Ultimate Fighter 17 has been by far one of the most exciting seasons in TUF history. At the very beginning everyone thought coaches Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones would be the center of attention, but that has not been the case at all with the fighters themselves stealing the show.

Both coaches put aside any bad feeling towards the other and simply coached their teams to the best of their ability. With all the talent on this season’s roster it was a great decision to just train their fighters, sit back and enjoy the fights. The 4 semi-finalists include team Sonnen members Uriah Hall and last pick Kelvin Gastelum, while team Jones has Josh Samman and another last pick Dylan Andrews.

145lbs- C. Jose Aldo (26-2-0) vs #1 Max Holloway (17-3-0)

  • Max Holloway +128 (51%, 23 Votes)
  • Jose Aldo -141 (49%, 22 Votes)

Total Votes: 45

The number 1 seed in this tournament has to be Uriah Hall who has won both his fights in the house by vicious KO’s in the first round. Josh Samman isn’t far behind Hall though as he has also won both his fights in the house by 1st round TKO & KO. Kelvin Gastelum also finished both his opponents by 2nd round submission and 1st round KO. Dylan Andrews won a unanimous decision and a 3rd round KO over Team Sonnen’s 1st overall pick.

The final episode of the season will showcase the semi-final fights to see who will be matched-up in the finals. Uriah Hall will face Dylan Andrews and Josh Samman will face Kelvin Gastelum. Both Andrews and Gastelum were picked last on their teams and were never expected to make it this far, but they both bring heart and skill into the octagon so either fighter could win and advance. Hall and Samman were both picked second on their teams and have proven their coaches right as they’ve easily made their way through the tournament.

The TUF 17 Finale will showcase the Middleweight Finals of this season as well as many other great fights. Travis Browne will take on Gabriel Gonzaga in a Heavyweight bout, Miesha Tate will make her UFC debut against Cat Zingano to see who Rhonda Rousey will face next and Urijah Faber will meet Scott Jorgensen in the main event. The preliminary card will have plenty of TUF alumni like Cole Miller, Justin Lawrence and Sam Sicilia as well as fighters from this season.

Smith- experience, height, cardio (heavily muscled), striking technique, defensive grappling, TDD

Prediction

One similarity that almost all of Bubba’s TUF fights have is his difficulty defending the takedowns. In the qualifier he was put on his back, again in his submission defeat against Gastelum, and even in his win over Kevin Casey he spent almost the entire first round grounded. He has won the majority of his pro fights by submission (15 of 20), but tapouts have also accounted for 4 of his 6 losses. Smith is a power grappler with a low center of gravity and big slams. His top game is solid, he pulled off a nice arm triangle choke to get into the house, and he has a combined 8 wins by submission over his amateur and pro career, but the major concern for him is his cardio. He is heavily muscled and against Barnatt he clearly slowed following the first round which lead to the finish. Bubba should have a technical striking advantage with Gilbert winging big power shots without setting them up, but if Bubba can’t stay vertical it’s a moot point. Bubba has an experience edge and I don’t expect to see much development on what we have seen out of him while Smith is relatively new to the MMA game and still making improvements which should be evident here. Bubba had no answer for the power wrestling/ slams of Gerald Harris in a fight earlier in his career and as long as Smith’s cardio holds up he should be able to find similar success so my prediction is Gilbert Smith to defeat Bubba McDaniel by submission.
